passing over passover

April 12, 2006 by Saar Drimer

PesachTonight is the Passover dinner, the all mighty Sedder.

I spoke with my sister who asked if I am doing anything special tonight. I asked back if she considers working “special,” then yes! I guess I chose to be the anti-social self instead of making an effort to be around company. Instead, I’m home eating a concoction of spaghetti (not kosher for passover, but why bother?) and curry dipped in lots of hot chilies and listening to Mashina. After a few (four, as tradition mandates; I didn’t sing the Kushiot, even though I am the youngest person in this lonely room) wine glasses and running nose from the good dose of Capsaicin I’m here writing a belated, too personal, post.

So, back to my sister… she then said, “so, you are passing over passover, so to speak…”. Yup. So back to the point of this post… even though I am not celebrating the (fictional?) exodus of the Jews from slavery and Egypt, and even though aside from the call home there is nothing to remind me of the holiday… I still feel it. Yes, I feel the holiday, I feel the feeling only holiday eves can give… the relaxation, the expectation of good, traditional, motherly food and good company… the feeling of belonging to something big? Maybe. I don’t know, I can’t explain it in words… but it makes me feel good, and that’s a good thing.

This, I owe my Mother. She always made the incredible effort in making holidays (and Friday meals) special family events. If it is the food, the conversation, everything. Thanks, Mom!

Happy Passover (and Easter) everyone.

Happy Passover, Saar! Lovely post. I hope your mom reads it.

Holy Toledo, it’s Easter! Argh. My mom is hosting a big dinner at her house and I’ve been so pre-occupied that totally forgot about it. Anyway, being the only vegetarian who will be in attentance, this is going to be awkward. (the wife had to bail out to study for the PE). Well, my mom always makes Costco ravioli, which are disgusting, but I am thankful that she tries.

חג שמח + אתה מצוייד בכישרון לכתוב על היומיום בפשטות מיוחדת ונוגעת ללב. יש משהו מנחם בלקרוא על היומיום של אחרים

    Chag Sameyach Saar,
I would have liked to have you over for some pesach-pasta that Angela makes with pesto.

    Kol Tuv,
    Mike

    Thanks, everyone.
I hope everyone survived it :)
    saar.

  6. It can be pretty tough to celebrate as a single. Not only does our family enjoy the seder but Christian friends often are honored to receive an invite. When I was single I tried to take the opportunity to find forms of celebrating it that were unfamiliar to me (from Kibbutz to Chabad).
